Jazz-minh Moore

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

There is a great painting show happening at the Lyons Wier Gallery (175 7th Ave (at 20th St.) in Manhattan right now. Artist Jazz-minh Moore has a solo show titled “Slipping Sideways” which will be up through June 20th. Jazz-minh’s paintings are alive, full of energy and emotion. Her technique is beautifully mastered and her colors bring into this dreamy and windy world. I can’t wait to see her work.

Here is an excerpt from the gallery press release:

Ms. Moore’s deftness of hand lends itself seamlessly to her methodology. Utilizing the wood grain as a landscape to influence her compositions, some sections are left unfinished and others are highly rendered. The level of completion is an evolving collaboration between the organic drawing ‘style’ present and the wood panel itself.

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

Stopped by my friend’s new spot in the L.E.S. to check out John Breiner’s new work. I’ve seen John’s art at Mighty Tanaka and have loved it ever since. His use of color and drawing skills are alive and playful. The opening itself was warm and fuzzy with good friends and ever better cocktails.

Panda is hosting artists John Breiner from April 28 – May 30th, 2010. Stop by from Wednesdays to Sundays and take a peek.

Max Greis & John Breiner

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

you can’t miss this pretty awesome show at Mighty Tanaka. Max Greis does collage landscape masterpieces depicting apocalyptic yet paradisal imagery, great blending brushwork, and just awesome to look at. And alongside is drawer and watercolorist (pencil color, pen, Gouache?) John Breiner. I’m attaching my favorites works of his, even though I love them all. So much awesome detail inside these intricate worlds. You must stop by and see ‘Entropology: Man’s Devolution.’

Prozess @ Lyons Wier Gallery

Prozess Opening @ Lyons Wier Gallery

Last night I attended the opening of Prozess, curated by Jazz-Minh Moore. The show included an array of artists with very interesting work. I personally loved Brian Dettmer’s book, Nivi Alroy’s desk, Chantel Foretich’s music box and Jeff Sims’s tea cup video. The show is only up for one week! So if you have a chance, swing by. wanna hang at a meth lab?

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Jonah Freeman and Justin Lowe. BLACK ACID CO-OP

Deitch Projects on 18 Wooster st. has an interesting project by Jonah Freeman and Justin Lowe called BLACK ACID CO-OP. It’ll be running until Aug. 15th. Be ready to sign a release form and experience a stuffy, burnt, messy, dirty, dark, claustrophobic, and skeevy meth-lab environment.

Jonah Freeman and Justin Lowe. BLACK ACID CO-OP

These guys did a good job transforming the space into a trashed trailer/abandoned 70’s ski lodge. You can go up and down stairs and get a feel of the underground meth culture… At one point, you’ll be inside a Chinese porn store, then find yourself at a beautiful museum-like room with its walls busted through. The back rooms, where the action happens, are torn up, burnt and pretty destroyed, the bathrooms are disgusting and the hallways seem dangerous to walk through. I felt like a investigator going through a freshly raided meth house. I forgot I was in the city for a second…

Mighty Tanaka Presents Alexandra Pacula & JMR

Mighty Tanaka Presents Alexandra Pacula & JMR.
detail of Vivacious Arcade, Oil on wood. © Alexandra Pacula.

I took some time to stop by Mighty Tanaka’s latest show including both artists Alexandra Pacula & JMR. Very different work, but they fit together well in this large gallery… JMR’s abstract, bold & colorful shapes were very vibrant and great to look at in this vast white space, I personally enjoyed his more sculptural pieces. Across the way were Alexandras’ large paintings of a darker color palette, showcasing the sometimes blurry nightlife in NYC. Her oil paintings have wonderful color and her brushwork was free-flowing yet thought through. JMR’s line work and layered pieces were also great to study and take in. Tomorrow is the last day to check out the show before it comes down, so sneak over to 139 West 14th St in Manhattan before 8pm and see it all for yourself. I took some shots, view them here.
